Every craving carries energy beneath it.
Sometimes the craving says:
“I need comfort." And sometimes: "I need to finally slow down." The body speaks symbolically as much as physically.”
Hunger operates on multiple layers simultaneously. Physical hunger (the need for calories and nutrients) is only one. Emotional hunger is another: the need for comfort, safety, connection. Energetic hunger is a third: the need for stimulation, vitality, a sense of aliveness. And there is what might be called meaning hunger: the need for purpose, engagement, and a sense that life is worth showing up for. When we eat in moments of craving, we are often trying to address one of the deeper layers using the only tool immediately available.
The energy behind a craving is often more revealing than the craving itself. A craving that arrives on Sunday evening may be about dread: the nervous system bracing for a week it cannot face. A craving that arrives during a dull meeting may be about stimulation: the body trying to wake itself up with sensory input. A craving that arrives at night may be about loneliness: the quietness of evening amplifying a sense of disconnection that was present all day. The food is not the answer. But it knows which question is being asked.
Learning to read the energy behind cravings is a nuanced practice that develops over time. It requires a willingness to be curious rather than reactive, to pause and ask 'what is this really about?' rather than immediately eating or immediately refusing. The pause, repeated often enough, begins to reveal patterns that are both specific and actionable.
Keep a brief craving journal for one week. When a craving arrives, note: the time, your physical state (tired, wired, calm, stressed), your emotional state, and what you were doing or thinking right before. By the end of the week, patterns will emerge that are more useful than any food plan.
Your body is not broken. It is speaking, often more clearly than we realise. The Body Intelligence Framework is built around exactly this: learning to hear what your body is already saying, and trusting it more each day.
