Short answer

Feeling costs energy and leaves you exposed, so your system only does it when the surroundings allow. If there was little room for your emotions earlier in life, your body learned to put them away. Around food you see that come back: what does not get felt has to go somewhere.

You only notice what was going on once you are alone.

A conversation goes fine, you stay calm, you say the right things. An hour later at home it arrives, or it does not arrive at all and you are standing at the cupboard instead.

That looks like not knowing yourself. I want to offer you another reading, because your system was waiting for a safe moment.

Why your system waits to feel until it is safe, and what happens when that moment never comes, from the Body Intelligence Framework by Agaath Zondervan
What does not get felt has to go somewhere.

Feeling is expensive and therefore conditional

Feeling an emotion takes attention, and attention cannot be spent elsewhere at the same time. Under threat that is inconvenient, so your system postpones it until it can.

What counts as safe, your body learns from experience. If sadness was met with anger, or ignored, it learned that sadness had better stay in.

“Your system waits to feel until there is someone it can feel with.”

Why food becomes the place

What does not get felt does not disappear. It stays as tension in your body, and tension asks for relief.

Food gives that relief within minutes and asks nothing of anyone. It is the one method always available, and the one where you do not have to trust anybody.

That makes it a logical choice rather than a bad one. And also the reason it keeps coming back, because the emotion itself has gone nowhere.

What safety actually asks for

Not that anything gets solved. Only that what is there is allowed to be there, without a reaction you then have to absorb.

That is also why a good conversation is so tiring and so relieving at once. Something got through that had been waiting a long time.

Safety has a physical side too, separate from who is sitting opposite you. A system that has been running high for days keeps everything in, even with someone you trust. That is why a conversation often goes better after a walk than straight after a working day.

Why you can also make it on your own

You do not always have someone to hand, and your system does not always need another person. What it needs is that nothing gets pushed away. Saying out loud what is there, or writing it down, already does part of that work.

The difference with thinking is large. In your head an emotion keeps going round; the moment it becomes words it gets a shape and an end. That is also why people often feel lighter after writing, without anything having been solved.

What does help

Find one person, not a group. With one person your system comes down faster. Groups ask for more vigilance than most people realise.

Say it out loud, even alone. Naming an emotion does something that thinking does not. Even to an empty room the tension comes off.

Notice where you put it away. Jaw, throat or stomach. For most people it is always the same place, and that place is a clue.

Do not wait until it is big. Naming small things is easier and practises exactly the same skill.

A question for yourself

With whom do you notice soonest what is there? And how much time sits between the moment itself and the moment it reaches you?

The question that shifts everything

As long as you ask why you feel so little, you are looking for something broken. Ask when do I feel, and a pattern appears. And a pattern can be extended.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it always arrive afterwards?

Because your system waits until it can. At home, alone, in the car: those are the places where vigilance drops. That the delay exists says something about the situation, not about you.

Do I need a therapist for this?

Not necessarily. For many people one place where it is allowed is enough. If something significant from your past is involved, guidance is wise.

I do feel, but always too much. Does this apply?

Yes, in mirror image. A system that had to wait a long time sometimes lets everything go at once. Naming small things more often makes the waves smaller.

How do I know whether my eating is about this?

Look at the timing. If it mainly comes after contact with particular people or situations, it is rarely about hunger. It is the emotion that found no place.
