Short answer

When fighting and fleeing are both off the table, your system turns everything down. You feel little, you struggle to get moving and everything runs on autopilot. That is not laziness but a third setting. You come out of it through small movement and contact, not through talking to yourself.

It is not that you do not want to. Nothing gets going.

You are on the sofa and you know exactly what needs doing. You just do not stand up. Later in the evening you are at the fridge, with no memory of having decided to walk there.

That gets explained as a lack of motivation. I want to offer you another reading, because there is a third setting alongside fight and flight.

Fight, flight and shutting down as the third setting of your nervous system, from the Body Intelligence Framework by Agaath Zondervan
Shutting down was the last option your system had.

What freeze does

If a threat is too big to fight and too close to run from, your system takes the last option: shutting down. Your heart rate drops, your muscles go slack, your perception dulls.

In an animal that is a short state that falls away afterwards through shaking. In people it can stay, especially when something went on for a long time that you could do nothing about.

“Shutting down was the last option your system had, and it chose it well.”

Why it is so confusing around food

In this setting hunger and fullness are both weak. You can feel nothing for hours and then eat a great deal at once, without there ever having been a moment when you decided to.

That eating is rarely comfort. It is an attempt to wake up. Chewing, taste and sugar are strong signals, and strong signals pull you briefly out of the dullness.

That is why it works for a moment, and why it comes back as soon as the signal is gone.

It helps to know that before you judge it. Anyone who thinks they ate out of weakness ends up at guilt. Anyone who sees they were trying to wake up ends up at a question: what else brings me round. That question has answers.

Why being stricter does nothing here

In fight or flight there is still something to steer. In freeze there is nothing to steer; the system is switched off.

Talking to yourself then asks something of the part that is least reachable at that moment. It mostly produces guilt, and guilt is tension, and tension pushes you deeper into the same setting.

What does help

Start very small. Putting your feet on the floor. Moving your hands. Sitting up straight. Not standing up and rescuing the day. One movement.

Use signals from outside. Cold water, a window open, music with a clear beat. Something gets in faster from outside than from within.

Find a voice. Call someone or listen to a voice note. Contact pulls people out of this setting faster than any exercise.

Let the shaking happen if it comes. Some people start trembling or take a deep sigh as things get going again. That is the response finishing itself, and it is allowed.

A question for yourself

Put your feet flat on the floor and press gently against it for ten seconds. Then see whether anything has changed in how clear the room looks. For many people it has, and it surprises them.

The question that shifts everything

As long as you ask why you cannot get yourself moving, you are looking for a deficiency. Ask what setting is my system in, and it becomes something else: not a question of character, but a setting there is a way out of.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as procrastinating?

No. When you procrastinate you do something else. In freeze nothing gets going, not even something enjoyable. That distinction is the clearest marker.

Is this part of depression?

It can look like it and it is not the same. Freeze comes and goes, often around particular moments. If it lasts for weeks, or there is little pleasure in anything, have a doctor look with you.

Why do I fall into it more in the evening?

Because you have spent all day pushing against something that never resolved. Once the pressure falls away, the system drops back into the setting that costs least.

Does exercise help against this?

Movement helps, but start small. A heavy session from this setting feels impossible and then becomes more evidence that you cannot manage. Five minutes of walking does more here.
